Can You Submit a Business to ChatGPT?

There is no universal submission form that guarantees a business will be named, cited, or ranked in ChatGPT answers.

The phrase “ChatGPT listing” is useful shorthand for improving a business’s visibility foundation, but it should not be confused with claiming a directory profile. ChatGPT Search can use web search and relevant sources when answering a question. The platform controls the response.

What OpenAI says publishers can control

OpenAI’s publisher guidance says public websites may appear in ChatGPT search and advises sites that want their content included in summaries and snippets not to block OAI-SearchBot. It also notes that referral links can include utm_source=chatgpt.com, allowing publishers to identify ChatGPT search visits in analytics.

Allowing the crawler creates access; it does not guarantee a citation or top position. OpenAI explicitly states that there is no way to guarantee top placement.

What a business can improve

Technical accessibility

Make important pages public, indexable, linked, fast enough to use, and understandable without requiring a complex application. Confirm that the host or CDN is not blocking the relevant crawler.

Business identity

Use a consistent business name, domain, contact information, leadership identity, service descriptions, and locations across the website and legitimate profiles. Add structured data only when it accurately describes visible information.

Question coverage

Publish original answers to the questions customers ask when discovering, evaluating, and comparing providers. Include limitations, practical examples, and evidence. Avoid mass-produced pages that merely swap a city or keyword.

Credible sources

Strengthen real-world authority through accurate profiles, customer reviews, professional organizations, interviews, partnerships, and other relevant mentions. Do not fabricate citations or buy fake reviews.

What no provider can control

  • The platform’s model, search partners, or ranking systems.
  • Which sources are retrieved for a particular prompt.
  • Whether the answer names one provider, several providers, or none.
  • How results vary by location, time, account context, or wording.
  • Future platform changes.

A responsible service promise

An AI visibility provider can audit, clarify, structure, publish, monitor, and recommend. It cannot truthfully promise a specific ChatGPT mention, citation, position, lead volume, or revenue result. Ask providers to explain their methodology and distinguish verified observations from forecasts.
